My birth certificate says “Oyinade,” therefore I’ve had this name for all 23 years of my life. I have heard people butcher my name by adding letters to completely calling me something else. However if it’s one thing I appreciate, it’s the people who actually TRY to pronounce my name. Unfortunately, I’ve come across a great deal of people who hear my name and instantly dismiss it.
Here are the most common responses I’ve gotten aka “5 Things You Shouldn’t Say To Somebody With An Uncommon Name”
1. Oh, I’m not going to get this.
This is for the people who don’t even try to pronounce someones name. They instantly give up. Not only is this hurtful but it’s very rude to the person who does have the uncommon name.
2. Don’t you have a nickname?
Again, before you even try to pronounce it, you’re looking for a way out. Smh
3. What’s that? [Insert random country name]
It’s great that you recognize that a persons name is African, Indian, etc. But trust me, we would prefer for you to ask and not assume which particular country it originated from.
4. Okay…
This is always just plain disrespectful.
“Hi, My name is Oyinade." *awkward pause* "…Okay.”
Am I not worthy of a real response?
5. Well it’s a beautiful name.
Don’t try to make up for your rudeness by inserting a random compliment! No one needs your justification.
In conclusion, It’s okay to acknowledge the fact that someone has an uncommon name. Ask them to repeat it slowly and if you are curious about the derivative, ask an open-ended question. Don’t try to play the guessing game.
Sincerely,
Oyinade [Oh-Yin-Uh-Day]
