The following image is from a post I saw on Facebook.
This person quickly deleted it but not before I could get a screenshot. I quickly reposted it to Instagram.
However, there was more I really needed to say and what better platform than my blog to say it!
This is in direct response to that post and I hope that person sees this as I will be linking it on my Facebook page as well.
Thank you for exercising your First Amendment, now let me exercise mine.
1. I do agree that all students deserve the rights listed in the article you linked. However, as an educator, I would expect you to know that that isn’t the case in today’s society.
2. Yes, parents should take responsibility for their children and should not rely on the government. However, as an educator, I would expect you to know that the very reason why certain groups of people do is because of the socially and economically divided system white people have created over the years.
3. My father is Nigerian and my mother is West Indian. Ever since they stepped foot in the state of Maryland, they WORKED their butts off to put me through school, college, and now graduate school!
I would hope, as an educator, that you would re-read this post and think carefully about what you are implying. I would also hope that, as an educator, you would do your homework and Google the term “white privilege.”
But please trust me when I say, WE don’t need YOUR ASSISTANCE!
I mean after all we do now have a black President 🙂
