I had orientation specifically for my program, PR. I took the metro to Clarendon and immediately upon exiting the station, I was stopped by a UN rep who of course wanted me to donate money. I kindly declined. We did have a good conversation though. I appreciated him calling me beautiful although I know he didn’t mean it. Not that I don’t think I’m beautiful but simply because anybody trying to get money out of you will say anything to make you feel comfortable enough to do it.

One of the most memorable moments of the night was meeting Rob, a PR program ambassador who was not assigned to me however I ended up chatting with him because the ambassador that was didn’t show up. Rob intrigued me the most because he works for a company that works for Americorp. The correlation there is that I also work for Americorp under the Public Allies program. Rob was great. He was funny, smart and likeable. As many of us were deciding on whether or not to go to the next orientation for all of the graduate programs, he said something along the lines of “it’s free why not go and get your money’s worth.” Lol anybody who knows me knows that’s all I needed to hear!

There were other things I learned that night that made me feel special and in the right place. One is that my class was the most competitive class to date as far as applications goes. And yet for some reason Georgetown picked me. Amidst the Louis Vuitton purses, perfectly coiffed hair and government employed students, lies me, Oyinade. Secondly is that their presentation wasn’t in PowerPoint buttttt…. wait for it…….. PREZI! You have no idea what it felt like to see that after most of my teachers in undergrad disliked the application. That’s when I knew I made the right decision. Oh and also because the program won PRWeeks best PR education program of the year. I guess it’s time for me to start taking my life seriously.
